1966 Ford Mustang Fastback
My first car was a 1968 Ford Mustang Coupe. I loved that car. I was 16 years old when I got it and I still think about it all the time. It's one of my greatest regrets that, years later, I got way too drunk one night in Hermosa Beach, California and lost it. And, no, I don't mean "lost" as in wrecked or destroyed. I mean "lost" as in misplaced. And people wonder why I don't drink anymore.
As much as I loved that car, the fact that I was very young, and very poor, meant that I never really got to make it into the car I wanted it to be. Fast forward 20 years.
I found this 1966 Fastback at a classic car dealership near Dallas. At the time (and still, really) the Fastbacks were getting hard to find. I flew to Dallas, saw the car, and bought it. It was really a driver at best painted in metallic blue with silver stripes. It looked good from 10 feet. From 2 feet? Not so much.
That was fine for me because I had (and still have) big plans. Right now the car's a skeleton. We stripped it to the bones and sent it out to be media blasted. And, as always, the media blasting revealed all sorts of issues we didn't want to see. Looks like we're going to get to test our metal-work and fabrication skills.
Now it sits in my shop on a rotisserie awaiting a full custom build. Shouldn't be too long and I'll be driving a classic Mustang once again. And this time I'm going to do my best to keep better track of it.
