1969 Porsche 912 Sunroof Coupe
Let me tell you about Kevin.
I used to work with Kevin. A long, long time ago. Kevin was one of the few truly terrible people that I ever met. He was also a jackass. Winning combination.
Now about the 912.
Sometime in 1984 or 1985, I saw my first real-live Porsche - a 912. The car had some issues. It was parked down by the docks near my hometown and the salt water hadn't done the car any favors. It had some rust. More than some, if I'm being honest. I didn't care. It was a real Porsche and I was instantly smitten.
Back to the jackass.
Five years later I've moved to Southern California and I'm trying to get my life started. I'm working in a record store and Kevin is a frequent customer who stops in almost every day, usually driving his Daddy's car - a Porsche, of course.
One day he arrives just as I'm getting up the nerve to ask out the cute girl who works in the video department and he makes his way over to us. "I'll bet you wish you were driving a car like that", he says as he gestures to his Daddy's Porsche. "I do", I tell him, "the first really cool car I ever saw was a Porsche 912".
Long pause.
"A 912 ??!!??. Ahhhh hah ha ha! You don't even know what a Porsche is. There's no such thing as a 912, you idiot. It's a 911."
I wanted to die. Remember, this was pre-Internet, pre-smart phone, pre-anything, really. I had no way to prove him wrong. I left cute-video-girl at her counter and slunk away.
25 years later and I can finally prove that Porsche made a 912. Unfortunately, I haven't seen Kevin for a couple decades. Last I heard, he had just purchased a new Hyundai. Good for him. He always seemed like a Hyundai kind of guy.
