1981 Porsche 911SC Targa
I've always loved the SC's. Something about that 3.0 motor has always felt just right to me. For years, these cars have been overlooked. Not any more. When I decided I wanted to find a really good one, I was in for a little bit of a quest.

The first five or six cars I looked at all had more problem than I wanted to deal with. One of the issues with these cars is that they were really the first 911's that had the now taken for granted Porsche reliability. The earlier cars, especially the 2.7 cars, weren't nearly as bullet-proof as these later 911's. You'd think that would be a very good thing - and it is - unless you're a collector. You see, low-mileage SC's can be very hard to find. Why? Because these cars were so damn good that people tended to drive the hell out of them!

But I was patient. And it paid off. Eventually this little beauty came my way: a 1981 911SC with just over 62k original miles. Black on black. Targa top. Everything I was looking for.

And here's my first memory of these cars. When I was a junior, my high school sent the kids in my class on field trips to various local businesses. The idea was to expose us to different kinds of jobs and help us start thinking about what we wanted to do when we graduated. Everyone got to choose two businesses from a very long list. I remember some kids choosing the local doctor and attorney. Maybe an accounting office. Me? I chose the Jiffy Lube and the taxidermy shop. Obviously, I chose the Jiffy lube because I love cars. The taxidermist? I chose that because some of the seniors told me the walls were covered by Playboy and Penthouse centerfold posters.

I still don't regret my choice. Oh, and back to the car, this poster was on the wall that day. It touched me deeply.
